Are You An Unknowing Beta Tester?

Strategy

There is a lot of hubbub this week about the release of Google’s Chrome, a new web browser. I won’t be joining in.

I have an unwritten (until now) rule that I am not going to be someone else’s beta tester. Sure, trying out new software can be fun. It can also be a complete waste of time, right up there with too much email and tweeting (at Twitter) about your daily bathroom and meal habits.

So Chrome is not on my list (yet) of software to install. I’m still happily using FireFox 2, and Internet Explorer 7 when I must. I use XP Pro and not Vista. In my online efforts I need tools that I know work, as some of my outside clients have me on short deadlines. There’s no time to experiment with new software that doesn’t work right.

I even stay happily behind the curve with hardware as well, buying off-lease computers at eBay with valid operating systems already installed. It’s a great way around the “only available with Vista” that plagues all the new computers I see offered.

That’s my take on staying sane in the hypey world of “must have” new software and hardware. Especially in the Windows world, the truth is that the latest software release is not always the greatest. In the hardware world it seems that the latest releases are most often targeted for entertainment purposes, rather than for productivity.

Maybe you are the kind of person who enjoys crashes, compatibility issues, and all that sort of fun. If so, go ahead, download that new browser. Load up on that new operating system. We’ll soon be reading your blog posts and Twitter tweets about all your software frustrations.

Not being an unknowing or unwilling beta tester saves me hours of time each month. My time is money, and so is yours. We’re all free to choose, but my advice to you is to not be an unknowing beta tester for someone else’s new product.

    Hi Lowell,

I agree! I have yet to install Firefox 3, let the others work out the bugs. It’s becoming more stable though so it might not be too long now. I also don’t use Vista, I bought a new computer that of course came with it, I had my brother rebuild it with XP! I am not rushing to download Chrome either. Let others test it out for me.

I don’t want the extra crashes, bugs and glitches that comes with the “new” yet unproven solutions just as you don’t. I too want reliability, not “will it work today”?

I guess we could be considered unexciting and not risk takers! lol!

I understand a lot of Google software is beta and will remain so for years. I suppose they’re primarily focused on search and Adwords/Adsense, and the rest is just a sideline.
