Hacking is one of the dangers lurking behind our firewalls that most of us online business owners give little thought to. And hacking is the big gorilla in the danger zone. You don’t think you can be hacked until it actually happens to you. When it does the reality of that nightmare hits the unprepared especially hard.

Hacking can come in many sizes and shapes: your site, your online accounts, your email accounts, anything. If you use PayPal, that can be hacked. If you have a WordPress blog, that can be hacked. If you bank online, that can be hacked. If you have a hosting account, that can be hacked. But okay, you know all that. The real question is how do you protect yourself?

There is no 100% solution for keeping your online business safe from hackers. However, there are simple things that you can do:

  • For sites like WordPress, make sure you have the latest updates.
  • For your accounts, make sure you change your passwords often.
  • Use Roboform if you can, but make sure the computer it is installed on is safe from theft. Roboform will help prevent key loggers from getting your password off your PC.
  • Make sure you have anti virus software installed and a firewall besides.
  • Make sure you update your anti virus software.
  • For hosting accounts, make sure your hosting company has security systems in place. Make use of the password generators most hosting control panels provide.
  • Don’t use common words as passwords. If you saw the lists that dedicated servers generate from hacking attempts you’d eliminate those kind of passwords entirely. Mix numbers and symbols into your passwords.

This past 6 months I’ve had my main gmail account hacked twice, and then access to many other sites and accounts was easy pickings for the hacker. Lucky for me it was a Nigerian IP address the hacker was using and all the sites that had anything to do with money red flagged my account and banned the hacker quickly, so no monetary damage was done. You may not be so lucky.

So if you think you can be too protected, think again. There are people out there who make a living hacking your PC, your website, your email accounts, and anything else they can get into for gain. Don’t make it an easy living for them.
